I would trade places with someone of a different race and socioeconomic standing than me. As someone from the white middle class, I have no way to describe and relate to the challenges other people face. While I can acknowledge them and offer my solidarity and support, I can never know what it really *feels* like. I think if more people could do that it’d be a game changer.

I have a few best friends. I met Nicole in middle school, bonding over a mutual dislike of another girl in our class. I met Eric and Nick in a dorm hall freshman year of college. And, I met Jacob and Kara and Holly and Jeff and Bryan through the fencing club.

Hm, the funniest thing to happen to me at school probably has to be when my boyfriend threw me a surprise birthday party (which was on the saturday of finals week), I found out about it, and when he picked me up for it it told me that no one showed. But when we got there, like 50 of our friends showed up and I literally almost peed my pants because I was so startled when we opened the door and they all yelled. They have me on video going “I need to pee, I almost peed my pants.”

Not So Long Ago, In Iraq

“It hasn’t taken long for the Iraq war to feel like a relic of history. Although U.S. troops withdrew from the conflict a mere 17 months ago, the story of the war already seems set in a bygone era—circumstances that have quickly been buried under an avalanche of newer crises. Photojournalist Michael Kamber, who covered the war for The New York Times from 2003 to 2012, noticed America’s desire to tune out the war while the battles were still raging. Visiting home while on leave during the war’s early years, Kamber grew frustrated that Americans were ill informed about the conflict, leading, he felt, to a public that didn’t care enough about the bloodshed he was documenting. His frustration grew as the conflict wore on, as the U.S. military took an active role in encouraging public indifference by censoring what could be photographed.

Now Kamber has responded with Photojournalists on War: The Untold Stories from Iraq, a riveting account of the conflict as told by three dozen of the war’s most prominent photographers. Kamber’s interviews with his colleagues cover the war as they saw it—their passion for the story, their fears and daily complications, and the trauma they live with still today. Some of their images are among the most iconic of the war, some are previously unpublished, and many are gruesome, shocking, and utterly dispiriting.

The book is out on May 15, 2013, via University of Texas Press.”

“I suspect it’s difficult for men to imagine a world in which their bodies have long been inextricably linked to their value as an individual, and that no matter how encouraging your parents were or how many positive female role models you had or how self-confident you feel, there is an ever-present pressure that creeps in from all sides, whispering in your ear that you are your body and your body defines you. A world where, from the time of pubescence on, you can feel the constant and palpable weight of the male gaze, and not just from your male peers but from teachers and sports coaches and the fathers of the children you baby-sit, people you’re supposed to respect and trust and look up to, and that first realization that you are being looked at in that way is the beginning of a self-consciousness that you will be unable to shake for the rest of your life.Even if they are never verbalized, the rules of bodily conduct for females become clear early on: when school administrators reprimand you for the inch of midriff that shows when you lift your hands straight in the air or youth group leaders tell you that the sight of your unintentional cleavage is what causes godly young men to fall, you learn that your body is dangerous and shameful and that it’s your responsibility to cloister it in a way that is acceptable to everyone else. You learn that your body is a topic of public debate that everyone is entitled to weigh in on, from a male classmate telling you that those jeans make your ass look huge to the male-dominated United States Congress dictating the parameters that rape must fall within to be considered legitimate. To be a woman, and to live life in a woman’s body, is to be held to a set of comically paradoxical standards that make you constantly second-guess yourself and jump through a million hoops in pursuit of an impossible perfection.”
